Bishop Magambo Counsellor Training Institute (BMCTI) was established in 2003 with a goal of training counsellors, educating the public on mental health, advocating for mental healthcare and providing much needed counselling services. BMCTI works closely with St Francis counsellor training institute in Mbarara. The Institute runs its academic programs under the Faculty of Health Sciences of Uganda Martyrs University. The Institute became fully operational in 2004 with the first intake of students on a two year Diploma Course. In 2006 two certificate programmes were developed, and in 2008 Uganda Martyrs University supported the idea of establishing a Masters Degree programme. At the moment Institute runs four academic programmes all accredited through Uganda Martyrs University. A BA program is awaiting approval and recommendation by University.

Although BMCTI is owned and governed by the Catholic Diocese of Fort Portal, like Uganda Martyrs University, through which her academic programs are accredited, it has over the years provided quality education to many regardless of their religious orientation. BMCTI is an answer by the Catholic Diocese of Fort Portal to meet the growing need for counselling services in Uganda, thus being a sanctuary of mental healthcare, which is an important aspect of Christ's healing Ministry.
