The Embassy of Japan accepts applications from qualified Ugandans who wish to pursue studies in Japan under the following scholarship schemes: Research Students, Undergraduate Students and College of Technology Students.

I. Research Student
1. Field of study:
Natural Sciences

2. Age
Applicants must have been born on or after April 2nd 1983.

3. Academic background
University Graduates with 1st class or Upper 2nd Class Honours Degree or Masters Degree.

4. Period of Scholarship
The term of the Scholarship will differ depending on the course the grantee takes in Japan. See the details in the Application Guideline.
N.B. Regardless of the timearrival in Japan, if a grantee enrolls in a master’s course, doctoral course, or professional graduate course after coming to Japan,the scholarship will be payable for a period necessary for the grantee to obtain his/ her regular course (the standard course term) in addition to a 6-month Japanese Language training period for a grantee who needs such training.

5. Documents to submit
a. Three copies of the Application Form and three passport size photographs
b. Certified copies of University academic transcripts
c. Certified copy of degree certificate
d. Curriculum Vitea ( not exceeding two pages)
e. Copy of Birth Certificate
f. Brief write-up (about 600 words) containing
(i.) Name/ description of field of study or research
(ii.) A summarized research proposal.
g. Other documents mentioned in the Application Guidelines

A preliminary shortlist will be displayed at the Embassy of Japan on13th June 2017,for those applicants who will take an English test on 20thJune 2017at the Uganda Management Institute.

II. Undergraduate Students
1. Fields of study:
(A) Science, Electric and Electronic Studies, Mechanical Studies, Chemical Studies, Civil Engineering, Architecture and other fields.
(B) Agricultural Studies, Hygiene Studies and science.
(C) Medicine and Dentistry.

2. Age
Applicants must have been born between April 2nd, 1996 and April 1st, 2001both days inclusive.

3. Academic Background
A’ Level leavers with a minimum of B in the relevant subjects.

4. Period of Scholarship
Five years from April 2018to March 2023, including one year preparatory education in the Japanese language. For scholarship grantees majoring in Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine or a six-year course in Pharmacy, the scholarship period will be seven years until March 2025.

5. Documents to submit
a. Two copies of the Application Form and two passport size photographs
b. Copies of UACE (A’ Level) and UCE (O’ Level) certificates
c. One copy of current ID and Birth Certificate
d. Other documents mentioned in the Application Guideline


A preliminary shortlist will be displayed at the Embassy of Japan on 13th June 2017,for those applicants who will then have written examinations in Maths, English, Chemistry and eitherPhysics for Group A applicants or Biology for Group B and C applicants on 20h June 2017at the Uganda Management Institute.

III. College of Technology Students
1.Fields of study:
Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Information, Communication and Network Engineering, Architecture, Civil Engineering, Materials Engineering and Maritime Engineering.

2. Age
Applicants must have been born between April 2nd, 1996 and April 1st, 2001both days inclusive.

3. Academic background
A’ Level leavers, with a minimum of B in Maths and at least two principal passes.

4.Period of Scholarship
Four years from April 2018to March 2022, including one year preparatory education in the Japanese language. For scholarship grantees majoring in Maritime Engineering, the scholarship period will be four and a half years, lasting up to September 2022.

5. Documents to submit
a. Two copies of the Application Form and two passport size photographs
b. Copies of UACE (A’ Level) and UCE (O’ Level) certificates
c. One copy of current ID and Birth Certificate
d. Other documents mentioned in the Application Guideline

A preliminary shortlist will be displayed at the Embassy of Japan on 13thJune 2017, for those applicants who will then have written examinations in Maths, English, Japanese, Physics or Chemistry on 21stJune 2017 at the Uganda Management Institute.

2. Applications should reach the address below not later than Wednesday, 5th June 2017

3. Only selected candidates will be called for oral interviews on 5th and 6th July2017.

4. Although Japanese proficiency alone may not necessarily be the determining factor, all applicants are required to take the Japanese language exam.
