Chinese as a Subject Examined by UNEB at UCE 2022: Results and Insights

For the first time, the Ugandan National Examination Board (UNEB) included Chinese as a subject for examination. The subject was assigned the code 396, with two papers tested at only a few centers in the country, attracting a limited number of candidates. This addition to the list of other languages such as German, French, Arabic, Latin and the local languages in Uganda, provides a new opportunity for language learning.

The Institute of Confucius, located at Makerere University, is a language and cultural center that is part of the worldwide network of Confucius Institutes. The Institute aims to promote the Chinese language and culture globally and offers a range of language courses and cultural activities for students, including Mandarin courses for both beginners and advanced learners as well as cultural activities such as calligraphy, cooking, and music.

The 2022 UCE results show that at least 4 centers participated in the examination of the Chinese language, with Ntare School in Mbarara leading the way with 82 candidates, of which 60 scored a grade of D1.

Being multilingual has numerous benefits, including improved communication skills, cultural awareness, career opportunities, enhanced cognitive skills, and improved writing skills.

Below is a detailed analysis of the performance of Chinese as a subject:
