Do Boys Study Better When Alone? What does UCE 2023 say?

The release of the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) 2023 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) results marked a significant milestone in the country's education sector. With an impressive 95.9% of learners achieving grades enabling them to progress to the post-UCE level, this accomplishment underscores the dedication of students, educators, and policymakers in advancing education quality nationwide, as highlighted by Mr. Dan Odongo, the UNEB Executive Director.

Furthermore, the rise in candidate participation, with 364,469 students sitting for the 2023 examination, reflects a growing commitment to education and efforts to expand access to secondary schooling across Uganda.

Advocates argue that such settings cater to gender-specific learning styles and eliminate distractions, potentially leading to improved academic performance. However, the reality is multifaceted, and empirical evidence is required to draw informed conclusions.

While some studies suggest modest improvements in certain academic areas, particularly in subjects associated with gender stereotypes, others caution against overstating the benefits of single-gender education. Factors such as teacher quality, school resources, and student demographics play significant roles in determining academic performance, irrespective of classroom composition.

To explore this issue further, let's analyze the performance data from various schools based on the UCE 2023 results, focusing specifically on boys-only schools. Here are the top-performing boys-only schools:
