English giants in Mukono District: Results from PLE 2022 Highlight Improvement
English is considered a crucial subject in any education system, and the recent results from the PLE 2022 exams in Mukono District paint a promising picture of the state of English education in the area. The results showed that at least 81% of the District's candidates scored between D1 and C6, with 90% of schools having less than 50% of their candidates scoring between P7 and F9. Additionally, 19 schools had all their candidates scoring between D1 and F9, indicating a widespread improvement with the subject.
The results also highlighted some specific schools that performed particularly poorly, with Nabiga Primary School having the worst performance in English in the district, followed by Kiwafu C/U Primary School, Gonve UMEA, and Kawoomya R/C Primary School. These results are alarming and highlight the need for improvement in the way English is being taught in these schools and many others.
One possible reason for the poor performance is the reliance on rote learning methods, which can stifle critical thinking and creativity. Another factor could be the lack of qualified and trained teachers, teacher absenteeism, as well as a lack of resources and support for the teachers who are working in these schools.
Remember, English proficiency is not a direct measure of intelligence. Intelligence is a complex and multi-faceted concept that cannot be reduced to a single factor or skill, such as language proficiency.
