Is lack of exposure to English a factor in Kaliro District?
Lack of exposure to English can make it more difficult for a student to learn the language and pass English classes. This is because exposure to a language is important for developing listening and speaking skills, as well as for building vocabulary and understanding of grammar. Without enough exposure, students may have difficulty understanding spoken or written English, and may struggle to express themselves effectively in the language. However, that being said, lack of exposure to English is not necessarily a barrier to learning the language, as many people have successfully learned English despite limited initial exposure. With proper instruction and resources, such as language learning materials and classes, students can still make progress in learning English.
In 2007, Uganda introduced a new primary school curriculum that included a thematic approach to learning, which integrated subjects such as math, science, and language arts into themes, such as health and environment. The new curriculum aimed to improve the relevance and quality of education, and make it more responsive to the needs of students and communities.
It is important to note that while the thematic approach was introduced in 2007, it was not fully implemented until recently as the government and education sector had to cope with the challenges of lack of resources, inadequate teacher training, and limited infrastructure.
A thematic curriculum is a type of curriculum that is organized around themes or topics, rather than traditional subjects like math, science, and English. In a thematic curriculum, different subjects are integrated and taught in the context of a central theme. For example, a theme could be "community," and the curriculum would include lessons on geography, history, and language arts that all relate to the theme of community.
This approach to curriculum is thought to be beneficial because it can help students see connections between different subjects and make the learning more meaningful and relevant to their lives. It can also be more engaging for students as it allows them to explore a topic in-depth, and also it allows them to develop skills and knowledge that are cross-disciplinary.
The curriculum emphasizes the need to teach in a local language. This may be a debate on whether it has a negative effect on English as a subject
