(2) enhance the capacity of primary health care providers to provide comprehensive HIV services and strengthen bidirectional linkages between health facilities and communities in rural Uganda;

(3) develop the capacity of undergraduate health professional students in rural Uganda to conduct locally relevant biomedical, behavioral, clinical, and operations research in HIV and its co-morbidities;

(4) strengthen a network of health professional training institutions (HPTIs) by building a community of practice and leveraging local resources and expertise to mitigate the national HIV/AIDS burden.

Additionally, a one-year supplement was awarded to the HEPI-TUITAH program to support undergraduate health professional students’ training and research in Alzheimer’s dementia and related dementias. Five research teams were awarded micro research grants to conduct research in Alzheimer’s dementia and related dementias. Manuscripts from the teams are being prepared for publication, however the findings will be presented during the joint research dissemination conference.

Under aim 3 small grants (micro research grants) were awarded to undergraduate health professional students from MUST, BSU & LU to conduct mentored locally relevant biomedical, behavioral, clinical, and operations research in HIV and its co-morbidities.

A total of 58 teams of undergraduate health professional students from the three institutions have benefited from this micro research model under the HEPI-TUITAH program between 2018 and 2022. Twenty-four (24) articles have already been published in peer reviewed journals with undergraduate health professional students as first authors, with many more manuscripts still under preparation for publication.

The joint HEPI-TUITAH research dissemination conference scheduled for October 21, 2022 at Igongo Country Hotel and Cultural Centre under the theme “Using the Micro-Research Paradigm to Meet the Presidential 2030 Fast-Track HIV Targets in Uganda” will provide an opportunity for undergraduate health professional students to share their research findings with different stakeholders involved in HIV prevention treatment and care.
